24 Sep 08 Security during Christmas

Christmas is the time of year people are joyful and full of bliss. They often have so many things on their minds that they do not consider crime lurking around the corner. There are many things you can do to protect your home and your belongings during the holiday season.

Many people like to put their Christmas trees in the window for everyone to see. The lights from the artificial Christmas trees look pretty from the outside of the home and it is exciting. Many people also begin to put the gifts under the tree early. The only thing this does is provide a way for people to see the gifts under the tree and a huge stack underneath the tree. Burglars who can spot this are enticed by the site of trees full of gifts. If your tree is in the window you should not begin putting the gifts under the tree until Christmas Day. If you have gifts you want to put out you might consider putting them in a different location in the house and keeping the tree gift free. Another solution is to not put the tree in front of the window at all. You can decorate the window instead by putting lights around it or something else.

It is common for people to be very busy and not thinking about locking their doors during the holiday. You should always lock your doors. If you normally live in a safe neighborhood and you don’t practice locking your doors, you should now. You should always arm your alarm and be sure it is working. The holiday season is a time that more people are robbed from their gifts and their expensive belongings. Don’t let this happen to you or the only joy you will have enjoying the lights down the street of the lighted palm trees.

Safety also needs to be practiced when you are out shopping. Many car jacking and other things happen when you are out shopping alone. The parking lots are full and you might end up on parking all of the way in the back of the parking lot. If you are at the mall and you know you are going to be there until late in the evening, you might take a break during your shopping before it gets dark and move the car up to the front of the parking lot. You can also wait in your car until a front spot opens up or a well lit area. Also, when you are walking out to your car take proper precautions. Be sure no one is in your car or following you out in the parking lot.

The Christmas season is a time of giving and sharing but hard times for some. Some people take desperate measures and steal or hurt others during this time of year. They take advantage of the distracted shoppers. Be sure you lock up your home and take precautions where you place your tree in your home. Also be careful about where you park and walking out to your car at night with a bunch of shopping bags.
